Sam Dawson (Sean Penn) is a mentally challenged man with the mental capabilities of a 7 year old. He is able to survive on his own, working at Starbucks and has a small place that is home. When he allows in a homeless women, she repays him with sexual favors and abandons Sam upon the birth of their daughter, a beautiful baby who Sam names Lucy Diamond. Lucy Diamond Dawson (Dakota Fanning) and Sam find their way in the world with Sam's loving yet quirky group of friends and all is well until Lucy finds herself passing up her father in her learnings. Social services take Lucy away from Sam and he is finally able to convince Rita Williams (Michelle Pfieffer) to take his case pro bono. A heartwarming yet at time heartbreaking story of a father's love.
