Elizabeth “Lizzie” Wurtzel (Christina Ricci) is an award-winning student who has been accepted to Harvard, where she plans on studying journalism. She struggles with depression, brought on by a broken home situation. She is saddened and in need of her father (Nicholas Campbell) who has been absent since her parents divorced when she was two. Her mother (Jessica Lange) creates problems for her as well, as she is overcritical and bitter. Sex and drugs begin to rule her life, and she alienates her roommate, Ruby (Michelle Williams), and both her first and second boyfriends. She hurts her friends and her mother as her depression worsens. She finally seeks psychiatric treatment from Dr. Sterling, (Anne Heche), and is prescribed Prozac. Although the drug helps, Lizzie questions who is in charge; her, or Prozac?
