Justin McLeod (Mel Gibson) was in an automobile accident that burned half his face. Because of the accident and the scars it has left in his heart and on his face, he lives a life alone. Rarely having contact with the outside world, rumors surround him that keep him isolated. Then, a boy named Charles E. 'Chuck' Norstadt (Nick Stahl) meets him on the coastal beach between their homes near a small town in Maine. Chuck is not afraid of him and knows that Justin can help him. Chuck lost his father and wants to get into the same military school that his father attended. Only, his grades are not good enough. Justin used to be a teacher. So Chuck begs Justin to help him. Justin must learn to climb out of his shell to take an interest in the boy and the boy needs a father figure in his life.
