Howard Hughes (Leonardo DiCaprio) is a young man intent on succeeding in business since inheriting his family’s oil tool business, but his attention is soon distracted by his mutual loves of aviation and filmmaking. He attempts to film an aerial combat scene for Hell’s Angels, but with the advent of sound, the lengthy filming process becomes even more lengthy and expensive, causing frustration for those surrounding him. The film depicts the early years in the life of Howard Hughes from roughly the 1920s to the 1940s. It follows his dual careers in aviation and filmmaking, but also delves into his personal life, particularly his relationships with Katherine Hepburn (Cate Blanchett) and Ava Gardner (Kate Beckinsale), including scenes depicting his infamous eccentric behavior such as his fear of germs.
