The ordinary life of wealthy housewife Diane Arbus (Nicole Kidman) is forever changed when a mysterious man moves into the apartment upstairs. Diane is intrigued by former circus freak Lionel (Robert Downy Jr.) and approaches him to ask if he would allow her to photograph him. So begins an intense and often erotically charged friendship and Diane’s descent into a community of circus freaks and drag queens at the fringes of 1950’s society. As Diane spends more time exploring this world and photographing her new friends, she distances herself from her well-known photographer husband, children, and prominent parents. When she tries to include Lionel in her family gatherings the situation turns tense and awkward. Eventually, Diane must face life without Lionel and is a reborn as artist in her own right and not just the proper wife and mother she is at the start of the story.
