This film is a dramatic recounting of the story of the events leading up to the birth of Jesus Christ. The film follows Mary (Keisha Castle-Hughes) and Joseph (Oscar Isaac) as they make their way across the desert in search of a safe haven for Mary to give birth to their child, while avoiding the dangerous King Herod (Ciarán Hinds), a tyrant bent on destroying the infant. The story that appears is a familliar one, with the manger birth and the visit from the wise men. The film focuses strongly on Mary's trials, as she worries for her son and for herself. Also portrayed are some of Mary's family members including her mother Anna (Hiam Abbass) and cousin Elizabeth (Shoreh Aghdashloo).
