The movie “Love in the Time of Cholera” begins with the death of old Dr. Urbino (Benjamin Bratt). His wife Fermina (Giovanna Mezzogiorno) finds Florentino (Javier Bardem) in her living room on returning home from the funeral, who tells her that he’s been waiting for her for years. She tells him to buzz off. Then there’s a flash back to 1879 in Columbia, when young Florentino first spies Fermina and immediately declares his allegiance to Fermina. But Fermina's father (John Leguizamo), who chews a mean cigar, refuses this courtship as he feels that Florentino, a lowly telegraph clerk, doesn’t deserve Fermina, a gorgeous rich woman, the daughter of Senor Daza. So, they’re pulled apart. Years later, Fermina falls under the spell of Dr. Urbino when he comes to examine her for the symptoms of cholera and marries him. Florentino, meanwhile, becomes a wealthy industrialist. He has 622 affairs by which he tries to keep Fermina far from his mind. This goes on right into old age, when Florentino, in his seventies, is shown in bed with a naked 20-ish bombshell who turns to him and says, “Let’s do it again. Please.” However, Florentino heroically manages not to pass out.
