Stevens (Anthony Hopkins) was raised by his father to become the head butler of Darlington Hall. So no one can fault him for putting his duty to his master above his own personal life. But there at Darlington Hall he meets Mary Kenton (Emma Thompson), the head housekeeper, who falls in love with him. But, in spite of all of Mary's attempts to get close to Stevens, he uses his responsibilities as head butler to shield him from becoming emotionally attached. However, when the end of World War Two reveals that the Lord of Darlington Hall was holding international conferences there to try to form ties between England and Nazi Germany, Stevens awakens to his misguided loyalty and takes a trip to see Mary after she has left her job. He hopes that it won't be too late to have a relationship with her.
