9 Songs mixes sex and music in a uniquely erotic love story. Matt (Kieran O’Brien) and Lisa (Margo Stilley) meet at a rock concert in London, and their love affair lasts several months. Explicit sex scenes, which feature real-life lovemaking in pornographic detail, are interspersed with Matt and Lisa’s other primary activity: Attending concerts. The film is half sex scenes and half live footage of popular alternative groups like The Dandy Warhols, Franz Ferdinand, Elbow, Super Furry Animals, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, The Von Bondies and Primal Scream. The ups and downs of Matt and Lisa’s relationship is told through both frank, realistic sex that exists far from pornographic fantasy and the bands they see.
