Celie (Whoopie Goldberg) has never had it easy. Her childhood was snatched away from her at the hands of her "father" when he repeatedly molested her, fathering two children that he took from her at birth. Her hopes of escaping that hell were never realized when she was forced to marry "Mister" Albert (Danny Glover) who beats her and treats her horribly. Mister really has his eyes on Celie's younger sister and she feels helpless to do anything about it as it is all she can do to take care of his house and his terrible children. When Mister gets a new woman, Shug Avery (Margaret Avery), Celie's life begins to change as the two become friends and Shug convinces Celie that she is more than Mister's slave. Celie also becomes friends with Sofia (Oprah Winfrey) who marries Mister's son. Sofia's past is troubled much like Celie's, but she refuses to tolerate. Can Celie become like the women she much admires and break free from Mister?
