Charlie Wilson's War
Amy Adams Tom Hanks
Charlie Wilson (Tom Hanks) is a bachelor, playboy congressman from Texas who is known in power circles as “Good Time Charlie” for his habits of showing up in hot tubs with strippers and cocaine. Beneath this exterior, however, lies an extraordinary mind. Charlie is a man with a deep sense of patriotism and a passion for the underdog. Surrounding Charlie is his longtime friend, patron, and sometime lover named Joanne Herring (Julia Roberts). Joanne is one of the wealthiest women in Texas and a virulent anti-communist. Joanne believes that the American response to the Russian invasion of Afghanistan is inadequate at best and she prods Charlie into having the U. S. government do more for the Afghan freedom fighters. To do this, Charlie enlists the help of blue-collar CIA Agent Gust Avrakotos (Phillip Seymour Hoffman). Together, the three of them—Charlie, Joanne and Gust—travel the world to form unlikely alliances among the Pakistanis, Israelis, Egyptians, arms dealers, law makers and a belly dancer.

This movie is based on the life of popular writer Truman Capote who worked for The New Yorker. On 14 November 1959, two criminals break into a house in Kansas expecting to find a huge sum of money. However, they don't find anything valuable. Frustrated, they kill the entire family, including small children, in cold blood to remove all witnesses. When Capote (Philip Hoffman) learns about this, he decides to base his next novel on this incident. When the criminals are arrested, Capote meets them in jail to interview them. One of the criminals, Perry Smith (Clifton Collins) is more comfortable with Capote. As they meet multiple times, Capote becomes emotionally attached to Perry. He buys stuff for him and even appoints a lawyer for them who drags the case for many years. Ultimately, Capote could not finish his novel.

Carnivale: The Complete 1st Season
Michael J. Anderson Adrienne Barbeau
Carnivàle doesn't waste any time making its--wildly ambitious--aims clear. As carnival manager Samson (Michael J. Anderson, Twin Peaks' diminutive backwards-talker) notes in pilot episode "Milfay," directed by Rodrigo García (son of Gabriel García Marquez), "To each generation [is] born a creature of light and a creature of darkness." With that the story begins. The year is 1934, the setting the Oklahoma dustbowl. In short order, Ben Hawkins (In the Bedroom's Nick Stahl) loses his mother and his home. He's poor, he's alone--he needs a job. So he joins Samson's carnival, en route to the West. Hawkins, naturally, is the good guy. Waiting for him in California is the not so good Brother Justin Crowe (Clancy Brown, The Shawshank Redemption), a fire and brimstone preacher with supernatural powers and a fiercely loyal sister (Amy Madigan). Hawkins, as it turns out, has similar powers....

Created by Daniel Knauf (Wolf Lake), Carnivàle feels like David Lynch (weird, slow, occasionally kinky), plays like American Gothic (Shaun Cassidy's cult series about a good kid and an evil sheriff), and looks like John Ford's Grapes of Wrath. It features one of television's most colorful casts of characters. They include Sophie (Clea DuVall), who reads fortunes--with her comatose mother's assistance, the vaguely sinister Lodz (Patrick Bauchau), blind absinthe-drinker and mentalist (he can see both the future and the past), and Ruthie (Adrienne Barbeau), snake charmer, strongman's mother, and all-around maternal figure. By the final episode of the season ("The Day That Was the Day"), also directed by García, one of these characters will be dead. Carnivàle won five richly deserved technical Emmys for its first year, including awards for cinematography and art direction. Like HBO's edgy Deadwood, it's period drama for people who don't normally like period drama. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

Cidade De Deus
Alexandre Rodrigues Seu Jorge
Cidade de Deus is the name of must famous favevas (poor house complex) of Rio constructed in the 1960's that became one of the most dangerous places in Brazil. The story in the early 80s tells the lives of many characters whose lives sometimes intersect. However, all is seen through the perspective of a singular narrator: Buscape (Alexandre Rodrigues), a poor black youth too weak and terrified to become an gang member but also to smart to be content with underpaid, minor jobs. He grows up in a very dangerous environment. All the odds are against him. But Buscape soon realizes that he can see reality differently than others. His salvation is that he's been given an artist's point of view as a sharp-eyed photographer. As Buscape is not the real central character of the film, only the narrator, he is not the one who makes the decisions that will decide the sequence of actions. Nevertheless, not only his life is attached to what happens in the story, but it is also through Buscape's perspective of life that one can understand the complex layers and humanity of a world, apparently fated to endless aggression.

Chaplin Today: The Great Dictator
Paulette Goddard Maurice Moscovich
The Chaplin Collection

Come heil or high water, Charles Chaplin is in the fight! And the result is a celebrated classic honored in 2000 as one of the American Film Institute's Top- 100 American Comedies.

The U.S. was not yet in World War II when Chaplin leveled his comedy arsenal at Der Fuhrer by playing the dual roles of Hitler-like Adenoid Hynkel and a Jewish barber who is a dead-ringer look-alike for der Nutsie. Puns, sight gags and slapstick abound as Chaplin skewers fascism, balancing his attack with poignant scenes of a ghetto in the clutches of storm-trooping terror. Immortal bits include Hynkel's besotted dance with a globe, the upside-down flight and Hynkel and a Mussolini-like Jack Oakie madly cranking their barber chairs higher and higher. Great comedy meets great filmmaking passion in The Great Dictator.
