Cidade de Deus is the name of must famous favevas (poor house complex) of Rio constructed in the 1960's that became one of the most dangerous places in Brazil. The story in the early 80s tells the lives of many characters whose lives sometimes intersect. However, all is seen through the perspective of a singular narrator: Buscape (Alexandre Rodrigues), a poor black youth too weak and terrified to become an gang member but also to smart to be content with underpaid, minor jobs. He grows up in a very dangerous environment. All the odds are against him. But Buscape soon realizes that he can see reality differently than others. His salvation is that he's been given an artist's point of view as a sharp-eyed photographer. As Buscape is not the real central character of the film, only the narrator, he is not the one who makes the decisions that will decide the sequence of actions. Nevertheless, not only his life is attached to what happens in the story, but it is also through Buscape's perspective of life that one can understand the complex layers and humanity of a world, apparently fated to endless aggression.
